How is WPM calculated?

WPM (words per minute) is calculated by dividing the total number of correctly typed characters by 5 (the standard word length), then dividing by the elapsed time in minutes.

Do I need an account to use TopTypist?

No account is needed to take tests, complete lessons, or play games. Creating a free account lets you save results, track progress, earn achievements, and appear on the leaderboard.

Why is my WPM different from other typing sites?

Different sites use slightly different calculation methods or penalize errors differently. Our WPM reflects corrected characters only, while raw WPM includes mistakes — both are shown on your results screen.

Can I use TopTypist on mobile?

Yes. TopTypist is fully responsive and works on mobile browsers. Tap the typing area to bring up the keyboard and start typing.

How do I reset my password?

On the sign-in screen, click "Forgot password?" and enter your email address. You will receive a reset link within a few minutes.
